    Description

From a Tucson estate some years ago is this rather unique I believe mid century or so Southwestern silver bolo - turquoise, native copper and red coral coming together in attractive fashion. The decidedly modernist neck ornament came from the same estate as the Carmelo Patania bolo I also have listed.  While it may have been commissioned from the bench of an in-house Navajo silversmith at one of the long gone downtown curio shops here in the Old Pueblo, I cannot say that for certain - there were skilled non tribal studio artisans at the fabled Ash Alley shops, also part of Tucson's long ago. Whatever that case the use of a "BENNETT / PAT. PEND." slide fitting supports a Johnson or possibly Nixon era time frame. All said, there is plenty of  "the look" to place this on the neck of a local somewhat more hip mover and shaker of that time or yours in this one.  Weight is good for the form at about 76 total  grams on my portable digital scale.  Condition of the silver slide ornament is generally quite good, with an aura of time to the oxidized silver surfaces and the ancient loss of one coral set - its old paper backing pad is still present and it appears the bolo continued on in service just so.  The spiderweb and possibly Kingman turquoise is well preserved - the very cool copper specimen shows appropriate tonal patination. That Bennett fitting works exactly as it should. The original plaited cords (I think these are black plastic rather than leather) are still ready for your next occasion. The copper cord tips - nicely toned as on the slide ornament - are well preserved. Typical and expected signs of previous ornamental duty simply serve as more evidence of a genuine history. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. The slide ornament is about 2 5/16 in. vertical and 2 1/8 in. horizontal at the top. The cord tips are about 2 1/16 in. long.
