    Description

THIS AUCTION FEATURES A RARE, MUSEUM QUALITY, ZIA POTTERY DOUGH BOWL. IT WAS MADE AND SIGNED BY BENIGNA (BENINA) MEDINA.  SHE WAS BORN IN 1873 AT ZUNI PUEBLO. IN THE LATE 1890'S SHE MARRIED RAMON MADALENA FROM JEMEZ PUEBLO. (THEIR DAUGHTER-PERSINGULA GACHUPIN IS/WAS AN ESTABLISHED POTTER IN HER OWN RIGHT.) ACCORDING TO HER GRANDAUGHTER, (REYES MAGALENA) BENINA WAS A VERY ACCOMPLISHED POTTER, HAVING WON PRIZES AT SANTA FE'S INDIAN MARKET IN THE 1920'S. AFTER MOVING TO HER HUSBAND'S PUEBLO, SHE BECAME INSTRUMENTAL IN REINTRODUCING A POTTERY MAKING TRADITION TO JEMEZ PUEBLO. THIS EXTRAORDINARY PIECE WAS RECENTLY ACQUIRED FROM AN HEIR TO ITS ORIGINAL OWNER. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TREASURED AND PRIVATELY HELD UNTIL NOW. MARKET FRESH AND A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A PIECE OF MUSEUM QUALITY ZIA POTTERY AND ZIA HISTORY.
