    Description

Vintage KATHLEEN WALL Native Cowboy Mask
The mask measures approximately 10" tall x 9" wide, not counting the hair.  Please examine pictures closely.  The hat has interesting variation in the colors.  I believe it is part of the original design, not something that happened later, but I could be wrong.  There used to be feathers glued to the hair.  They could easily be replaced.  But we felt that the owner should be the ones to make that call.
This is a rare piece and has some age/wear, but in overall amazing shape.  Feathers are missing.  But there is no major damage.  Consider the pictures as the majority of the description.  I love that you can see her finger grooves on the inside of the mask, showing, again, this was an earlier piece.
Kathleen Wall was recently named the Native Treasures Living
    Treasure
    by the
    Museum
of Indian Arts and Culture for the 2nd year in a row, (2020 and 2021).  Known for her whimsical Koshari, this Native Cowboy is a VERY RARE, early piece.  I know I've never seen any masks that weren't clown related by her.  I love the character captured in the face.
    From Bronzesmith
Creating her first storyteller when she was eight, Kathleen is descended from a long line of ceramic artists. From her grandmother, Cari Loretto of Jemez Pueblo, who taught six daughters, to mother Fannie, who taught her in turn. Kathleen has supported herself as a working artist from the age of seventeen. After high school, she went on to receive formal training at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and currently has a studio at Jemez Pueblo. In addition to her clay work, Kathleen is now creating bronze sculptures to add to her ever expanding collection.
Kathleen was the first place recipient for her bronze sculpture" Blessed Gifts" at the 2011 Heard Museum show.
    From Fine Pueblo Pottery
    Kathleen Wall
is a world-renown potter from Jemez known for her whimsical Koshare clown figures and masks. Kathleen's father, Steve Wall, is a Chippewa stone sculptor, while her mother Fannie Loretto, is a well known Jemez potter. Naturally, Kathleen knew she wanted to work in clay. "When you're absolutely surrounded by it, you can't help it," she says, "I picked clay as an art form because I grew up with it. It came naturally, but it didn't come easily." Kathleen graduated from the Institute of American Indian Art and her work has become a part of the permanent collection at the IAIA Museum. When she entered her work for the first time for judging at Indian Market in Santa Fe, she went home with the top honors in the ceramic sculpture category.
