HANDCARVED & POLYCHROMED WOOD
CIRCA 1910
This is an authentic polychromed Santo Domingo Pueblo
Native American made wood plate from the early 20th century!
One finds pottery fairly easily, but wood plates- almost never!
This dates to after the Santo Domingo Pueblo were contacted
by American traders & travelers after 1880.  The influence led to
an appearance of Santo Domingo geometric designs on wood
as well as pottery!  Travelers of the railways ended up
in Santo Domingo in 1910-20. Other native areas were still
out of reach.  The Pueblo sold wares to travelers during
this period & artisans experimented with pieces designed
to appeal to their buyers - in this case a wood plate!
This piece has been part of a local collector's
Southwestern Indian Art Collection for over
four decades and this is its first time making
an appearance in the marketplace.
This very rare plate is in fine vintage condition
with amazing marks of usage, staining etc.
The wood has cracked with age all over the
place and it presents beautifully!
This
