Named places and features on the map include the Moultrieville Steamboat Landing on Sullivan's Island, Cooper River, Hog Island Channel, Castle Pinckney Lighthouse, Cummings Point Battery, Fort Johnson, Shem Creek, Shutes Folly Island, Haddrell's Point, Ashley River, and part of the Charleston waterfront.
This map was published in the April 27, 1861 issue of
Harper's Weekly
, shortly after Confederate guns around the harbor had opened fire on Fort Sumter, leading to the surrender of the Union garrison, the fort's evacuation, and the official start of the Civil War.
