Condition; Very Good: Although this jar has an excellent high polish there is some mild spackling and light wear as seen in the photos. The signature is very faint and mostly worn off; probably from years of shelf display.
Description: Maria Martinez is probably the most famous Native American Artist of the 20th Century. She had exhibited at several world fairs, books have been written about her work, and her pottery is held in great esteem by museums and knowledgeable collectors. The vessel was formed by hand coiling the clay, than polished with traditional stones handed down from generation to generation. The design is created by using a mat-slip, and then the pot is fired in an oxygen deprived atmosphere creating the black on black coloration. This piece is an excellent example of the work of Maria and her spouse Julian Martinez who is reputed to have created most of the designs during this period of Maria’s pottery.
